The Importance of Clothes in the Life of Jane Austen
Jean-Marie's characters in all these novels, we might think of them as being autobiographical, none of them are artists. They're women who have fallen off the edge of what is the life that women are supposed to lead. So they live in this kind of world of incredible economic percariaseness. And so the great insight about these novels is how women can fall into prostitution because of this world of dependence of men. She lives for this world of the feminine, the female stereotype. But beneath it, there's always a strong sense of not fitting in.
