What's the Point of the Northern Reconstruction Government?

The Northern Reconstruction government tried to treat Black people like citizens. Southern leaders reasserted their authority by creating a series of laws that are largely referred to as pig laws. What you have is a situation in which you can buy a piece of land, but that doesn't mean that you can defend it in a court of law.
