Some would say imperialist campaigns was done to bring the Irish into what is now called the United Kingdom. Protestants in the late 1500s, early 1600s were designed to settle Ireland and also make it more sympathetic to the Protestant Kingdom of England. So, there was a kind of geopolitical, militarily defensive logic to planting Protestant settlers in Ireland. This long predates the Armada and the threat from Habsburg, Spain, no? Oh, I don't dispute that. The fact of the matter is, from our point of view, appallingly and dreadfully bloody,. all sorts of people are brutal to each other.
