In episode three, forty, i mention that escalators can be more of a fire hazard than either stairs or elevators. The shape of the escalator essentially funnelled flames from one story to the next in a phenomenon known as the trench effect. A lit match was dropped on the 50 year old wooden escalator and fell through a gap to set fire to an accumulation of lubricant, grease and debris beneath it. And apparently, all this happened because one person dropped a match on them.
