Buddha believed there were gods, but he didn't say one was in charge of it all. Human is the best because we're vulnerable and yet have a kind of divine intelligence. The unexamined life is not worth living, specially as a human. Don't expect to be president if you get god, even if you think you are. Life itself is a teacher that will teach us what we need to know. Nature basically wants to eat us up so being miserable is realistic.
Bob Thurman is a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the Department of Religion at Columbia University. He’s also the President of the Tibet House US, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan civilization. He’s also the President of the American Institute of Buddhist Studies.
