The Cooling Effect of Sulphate Aerosols
Sulphate aerosol particles can cool the earth by reflecting sunlight back to space. So when there's lots of that kind of pollution around, it can actually have a cooling effect partly offsetting the warming effect of greenhouse gases. And sulphate aerosols are also a consequence of burning fossil fuels, which is the main contributor of rising greenhouse gases. They're also really hazardous for health, aren't they? So it is a good thing that we're cleaning them up. A good thing to clean it up, but it has an unfortunate side effect of unleashing more warming from greenhouse gases.
