The success of BPE has validated exactly what I was arguing for in my thesis, which is that we should be doing unsupervised segmentation for natural language processing systems. These algorithms are very, very fast, very, very efficient to apply and convenient. So I think there's an argument for using those even over more complicated things that work better.
