The Rise of Taiwan as a Semi-Independent State
China sees Taiwan as a part of its territory and for the Taiwanese. How is this sort of semi-independent state come to be? There's a lot of argument about that, depending on who you ask. The United States helped to defend Taiwan in the early days. It was an authoritarian, almost totalitarian government run by the nationalists. But it made a transition very successfully to becoming the prosperous democracy today.
