In earlier days, the absence of that extra eight gigs of read cache would have made itself immediately felt. Now the need for a read cache isn't as strong. Even incredibly fast solid state drives are nowhere near as fast as RAM. The takeaway here is that it has become more okay for most people to only have enough RAM to fit your programs and their immediate necessary data.
