How Does Metabolism Affect Capacity of Consciousness?

The only form of high level intelligence we know so far are ourselves and the systems that are on the biological evolution on this planet. The immune system, which is entirely unconscious, may be a very, very important precursor for distinguishing between me and not me. Most artificial systems are not resilient against drastic hardware damage. They cannot adapt their self model to losing a leg or something like this. We don't know how this low level realization in autonomous molecular dynamics, self organizing circuits, below single neurons, how that robustness and adapts. If that is central for consciousness and intelligence, and if it is, machines make me a long way from this.
