Early on, I think until around 2000 maybe, a little bit before maybe after, you could actually see them as cousins of technical traders. Using price movement. All about price as an input. And that's what they focused on looking at patterns, looking for patterns in the market. So that's not unlike what technical traders do. But now you can look at them as sort of an early version of machine learning because their models work on their own. They don't even know really why their stuff is doing, what it's doing,.
