"I was too excited to wait. I had a powerful headlamp so the darkness wasn't going to deter me," he says. "Out-the-tude sickness doesn't affect me so much until I get up over 8,000." The temperature hovered right around 38 degrees which would drop to about the freezing point higher up. He didn't need any hooks or ropes, just good climbing boots. But he did have to constantly move with his hands pressed against the rocks to maintain balance.
