Abby kept the lights on Matineka's Rock operational for four weeks during a storm. She was able to keep her family fed on cornmeal and one egg per day. Her heroism remained unsung at the time. In 1861, her father was replaced as keeper by President Lincoln because he had not supported Lincoln. Abby asked if she could stay behind to train the new keeper, Captain John Grant. The two married and served as assistant lightkeepers there together until they retired in 1875.
