The First Gulf War - Satellites Really Matter
I'm not sure anybody was aware of just how crucial satellites were and how much they were a potential vulnerability for the US military until the first Gulf War. The Chief of Staff of the Air Force at the time, General Merrill McPeec, would describe the first Gulf war as the first space war. So in thefirst Gulf War, you see things like imagery being, you know, downlinked and used by military forces. Commercial imagery is used for the first time in conflict in the first Persian Gulf War. GPS is introduced for precision guided munitions. And there's also anticipation that in a decade or more, there's going to be another near-peer threat to the United States.
