Is Exercise Associated With Heart Attacks?

Heart attacks happen when these plaques suddenly or acutely rupture. So calcified plaques tend to actually be more stabilized and lower risk compared to their non calcified counterparts. It could be that repeated aerobic exercise increases how often and how long the coronary arteries are exposed to turbulent blood flow, which would drive plaque formation. We don't really have any long-term data linking higher CAC scores in athletes to bad outcomes.
