By 1950 Ireland had the highest level of people in course of confinement in psychiatric hospitals globally. And ultimately, when I looked at the work of why Irish people, so many Irish people ended up in institutions, it comes back to social forces,. It comes back to poverty. We're trying to make ourselves feel better by just talking about mental health awareness rather than understanding why these systems exist.
