In the first hour, most of the fire fighters assumed it was an accidental gas explosion. But a senior detective on the scene sensed that something was amiss. A crane opera er was just finishing his shift at five o'clock and lifted out the final load of the day. The big bucket splashed into a hole in the middle of the rubble, now filled with seven feet of black rain water. It took a moment for the detective to realize what they were blasting caps.
