Women's Rights in the Twelfth Century

It can be easy to assume that progress for women in western society has been a linear thing. The idea is that things were at their worst during the mediaeval period, then steadily as the world progressed from darkness to light,. But this assumption is completely wrong. Later periods may have more restrictive rights for women. Do not progress in a straight line. It could be argued that the seventeenth century was an even more restrictive time for women. For instance, it would become harder for women to inherit large tracts of land, as eleanor did in the twelfth century. In later periods men would assert their power in more intense ways and box women out more explicitly.
