I'm Glad You Brought Up Herodotus Because It Feels a Little Straw-Man-Y to Me

I'm really glad you brought up Herodotus because it feels a little straw-many to draw the comparison between Phoenicians who don't think of themselves as a collective and Greeks who do. There's this massive series of events that happen in and after the 5th century BC that create a sense of Greekness rather than other things. And because that doesn't happen for the Phoenicians in the same way, and we don't have the body of texts that would do that work to say that they didn't have a sense of themselves, it seems alittle straw-man-y to me.
