The Home Secretary's Back Strikes
My mother was a very community-minded person, and that's what I really learnt from her work as a councillor. She wanted to be part of the Conservative Party - it symbolised getting involved in the community. In the 80s there were a lot of strikes going on, and I was in a state primary school. Every Thursday, or pretty much often on a Thursday, it was strike day. And I, as a six-year-old child, would love strike day, because it meant I could stay at home and I'd have the undivided attention of my mum. My parents thought otherwise, and the militant unions and industrial action became an unsustainable problem for my parents.
