Making Sense with Sam Harris

CHAPTER

Is Consciousness Consciously Different From Attention?

consciousness is irreducible, which is to say, we define it in circular terms. So if a bat is conscious, that's simply saying that there's something that its like would be a bat. And so when talking about one's own conscious experience, i would differentiate consciousness from attention. Say, so i can be paying attention to one thing, but also dimly aware of the things that i'm trying to exclude from my experience by focusing on the one thing. There's a kind of a centreand an periphery, you know, very much ana s to what we experience in vision.
