The Austrian Army in Galicia
The Russians captured Lemberg, the Austrian name for Levov-Laviv, now in Ukraine. Shemeshil was a harder military nut to crack than Lemberg and it had to be done to allow further Russian advances into western Galicia. Most of the officers were middle-aged Polish and Austrian reservists; enlisted men were peasant Poles or Ruthenes. The elite units were the Hungarians from the near south, across the Carpathians.
