Did Levinaas See the French Resistance Scapegoating Women?
Emmanuel Levinaas argued that it's precisely an encountering the other and quite literally in looking into their eyes that were called to recognize their dignity. So did Levinaas just see the same failures in human encounters in France and just draw the opposite conclusion from Gerard? Like Gerard sees the human encounter as a battle and Levinaas saw it as the first act in a friendship, but these would reflect two different ways of reading like post-war France.
