Asciakus was relieved of his duties after just eight months in command. Relations between the Peloponnesian fleet, Asciakus and Tisafarines went from bad to worse. The Melisians decided to take advantage of the internal strife by attacking and expelling the Persian garrison in their fort at Meledus that was built by TIsafarines. And so in late July, he finally dispatched Clearchus to the Hellespont with a force of 40 ships. But as they sailed away from the coast westward to the open sea in order to avoid the Athenians at Samos, a sudden Aegean storm prevented most of the ships
