One trick that's helpful is to, in your mind's eye, imagine that trigger person moving away from you and shrinking into the distance. Pemachodran puts it beautifully: 'What are you saying? What's important to you actually conveys you care' And te best approach i have found when somebody else is angry, and i've kind of settled some, is to ask them say, "Help me to understand what's going on with you"
