The stories were likely an expression, or an outlet for a feeling of resentment towards masters and other undeserving superiors. And so they developed this figure of robin hood, who is the ideal yeoman with freedom in the greenwood. So ther you can see a kind of group, almost like a class, consciousness, of the yeomanry expressed in these stories. It served as a meditation for what it meant to be aYeoman.
