The main female character in the book is a female welder. I've always been slightly fascinated by the so-called gender division of labor. The oil changed all of that too. And you had women getting their hands extraordinarily dirty perforce as part of the same gold rush. But really this is also a book about individuals, about friendships, sometimes friendships sundered and about communities.
