The History of Chickens
Today's chickens were first domesticated from red jungle fowl or gallis gallis, which is a tropical bird native to Southeast Asia. Chickens were also carried from the Indian subcontinent to islands in the Pacific and from there to the Americas. Over the course of the 19th century, people in Europe and North America started developing new breeds of domestic chicken.
In the 1940s the U.S. Department of Agriculture and A&P supermarkets teamed up to hold a contest to see who could breed the meatiest, most efficient, most visually appealing chicken.
