Egypt's Role in the Middle East Conflict
Egypt and Israel have up until this point had a stronger alliance of interests on Hamas than they've ever had in the past. Egypt has demonstrated its unwillingness to exercise that leverage over Israel to hold it back at all from the conflict. But if Israel goes deeper into Gaza and particularly if Israel adopts the war aim of trying to eliminate Hamas rule or push Hamas out then I think Egypt has a bigger problem. One consequence of such an Israeli operation might well be to push Hamas and even more extreme jihadi groups onto the Sinai desert.
