Introduction
Since last April, five states Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkan, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have informed the center that they would be reverting to the old pension scale. Some analysts have even said that one of the reasons for the Congress's victory in Himachal was its campaign promise to go back to the old pensions scheme. We ask why do employees warn the OPS while the center is pushing for the new pension scheme or the NPS as it's come to be called? And realistically speaking, is the OPS sustainable in the long run? Or will it bankrupt state governments?
