Using Strategy Board Games to Find Solutions to Complex Environmental Problems
Tropical ecologist Claude Garcia uses strategy board games to reach agreements on complex environmental problems. He and his team work with communities from India to villages in Cameroon to design the games they'll play together. Unlike most games there is no set definition of how to win, each player must decide what winning looks like for them. The point is that players can directly see the consequences of their decisions over time. In many cases these gaming sessions have led to concrete results such as farmers forming cooperatives or national regulation being changed. Remarkably,Claude's games have been used to help manage palm oil supply chains in Congo Basin.
