Irenaeus's Against Heresies is one of the most fascinating pieces of writing to have come down to us from the second century. In making his case against Gnosticism, Irenaeus is at his most piercing and effective when he invokes apostolic succession. The author also takes a more traditional Roman route of slandering his targets as sexual profligates.
