How to Manipulate Memories in Mice With Optogenetics

A new paper shows how optogenetics can be used to manipulate memories in mice. The technique involves switching on or off specific bits of the mouse's brain. It works by labeling neurons that were really active when a mouse was forming a memory and then turning them back on at a later date, effectively reawakening it. And all you're doing is turning back on the brain cells that you labeled when it was learning it in the first place.
