Hutchings first visited the yosemite valley in 18 55. He would become california's most prolific publisher of scientific literature, publishing everything from periodicals to almanacs. Hutchings wanted every american to experience yosemite, and his enthusiasm worked. Delighted visitors flocked in from around the country. And as his publishing business reached peake profit, hutching realized it might be possible to have his cake and eat it too.
