Hector was disturbed by the intrusion of a stranger into his wife's solitude. He decided to accompany her on rustic rambles in the park and woods. For a week they saw no one, but an occasional peasant or household member. Hector went straight to the village to inquire if any stranger had been seen there. His wife shook her head: "He is no peasant"
