Edwin l drake had come to western pennsylvania with the goal of finding a commercially viable way to extract petroleum from the ground. At that point, there really wasn't one. On august 20 seventh, 18 59, though drake's well and titus ville, pennsylvania, struck oil. People flocked to northwestern pennsylvania to try to replicate drake's success.
