The Gut Microbiota and the Pathogenesis of Anastomotic Leak in Patients With Colorectal Cancer
This is one of the first solid data demonstrating a causal role of the pre-op gut microbiota as a whole in the pathogenesis of anastomotic leak. We showed that the gut microbiota influences local wound inflammation and repair by regulating the basal level of mucosal cytokines. And what is interesting is that we identified a strain of parabacteroidies, gold stainae, which improves healing by exerting an anti-inflammatory effect. The next step would be to naturally to identify pre-operative screening markers to detect these low-grade microbiota-driven inflammation in the gut prior to surgery.
