What's the First Sandbox Game?
In 2001, Rockstar releases Grand Theft Auto 3 which brings a bunch of these open exploration sandbox elements to kind of the big-budget action-adventure game. The other thing that came out in 2001 that I think was incredibly significant to the development of the sandbox game is RuneScape. It took elements of the fantasy MMO and it deployed them in this really easy-to-consume format.
