Tonga eruption – how it happened

Unexpected Elements

CHAPTER

Exploding a Volcano - What's Happening at Hunger?

It's unusually powerful for the size of the eruption. I was seeing some reports from nassa that were describing it as being something like 500 times the size of a hirochima atomic bomb. The keything about this one, to make it even more violent than just a normal, violent, explosive eruption, was that the top of the volcano was about between 50 and 250 meters low sea level. Any more water than that and you have a suppression of any gas escape and explosion. If the edifice was poking out of the water, it would have been quite violent. But it had the extra energy because it was just the right amount of depth below the water.
