First thing that happened is many people leave grad school or can't get a job. That's one kind of effect, it's just grinding, double digit unemployment rates for PhD scientists. A secondary effect is that twice as many people leave particle physics as enter it in a narrow window and go to these kind of neighboring or hybrid areas.
