Our sense of ourself is much richer than what we tend to think of as our identity. The mystic in being awakened an this mystical consciousness then transcends the cultural setting in which the awakening occurs. In order to share with us what they have been awakened to, they draw upon the images and language of the culture in which they are living. I'd like to suggest something else here about the mystic, and she's going to begin to touch on this fairly early on in the book.
