The Relationship Between Alcohol and the Roman Empire

In the medieval period, people like an English peasant would have been drinking ale from the beginning of the day with breakfast throughout the day. The average Roman would have consumed somewhere in the range of somewhere north of a bottle of wine per day according to normal consumption. It's easy for us to kind of look back in a puritanical sense at prohibition but by our normal standards, these people were drinking a lot all the time.
