The Overton Window of Discourse
Today, we end up with what seems to be just a cacophony of really extreme minority opinions. And that's largely a result of the way our social media environment is geared towards prioritizing affective engagement. There was a an obscure libertarian strategist back in the day named Overton who came up with this theory called the Overton window. If you ask for a lot, if you start your negotiating with the most extreme position, then you're going to change the entire discourse around what is acceptable.
