The Greatest Christian Poet in the History of English
He's been a hard guy to pin down in terms of his theology, or what exactly he believed. He is certainly the greatest christian poet in the history of english on one level. By the end of his life, he does believe in the trinity, which is one of the most dangerous things you can do. In the same way that i think openly his poetry sort of changes your sense of what of what language can do and what a poet looks like.
