The Chinese Room Argument

The same output could be produced by different processes, one of which might imitate thoughtful processes and the other of which is not thoughtful at all. If you're interested in this subject, I heartily recommend John Searle's favorite argument called the Chinese Room Argument. It went through two phases where he gave too credit, too much credit. Computers recognize shapes. They recognize physical inputs. And they are programmed to manipulate physical inputs according to the rules. So what you're learning is that things that you used intelligence to do can be done without intelligence.
