We're trying to understand how our solar system got to be weird the way it is. Why don't we have a bunch of other planets close to the star? Why is mars so small? Why is the asteroid belt the way it is, this weird mix of rocky and icy objects? So we've taken clues from these other solar systems that have big planets really close to their star.
