I think oil really lends itself to strong metaphors, the idea that you're both blessed and cursed if you've got oil on your land just drew me to it like a magnet. Maybe the best money is not striking the oil itself, but servicing the industry, whether by banking or shipping and so forth. And it does have that Klondike feel to it, I think. It has affinities with actual Yukon prospecting in the States back in the 19th century.
