Is Uncle Tom a Spoof?
"Uncle Tom," by Harriet Beecherstow, was like Lenin's favorite book as a child. He gets whipped to death because he refuses to tell this brutal overseer where the slaves have gone. The idea of self-organization overthrowing slavery and all that kind of stuff doesn't come into it. It says, it's not a particularly militant book. But Tom is this guy who, when he's told, I will promote you if you whip her, he says, no, I can't do that. I'd rather die."
