The Dow Industrial Index

In 1893, Charles Dow started thinking about the industrial. Unlike today, in order to buy that index, you had to own each individual company. He created this and it was just a proxy for what the industrial companies were doing. And apparently before that, he created one just for transportation. So maybe that was the first sector index, interestingly enough.
