The notion of a human body's persisting after death wasn't in Judaism. Since it became the central tenant of Christianity, then Judaism reverted to an older view of the afterlife. But you're right, most Jews would not have thought in these celestial terms. They were thinking very simply, oh, you're calling yourself the Messiah.
